What is a septic system?
A septic system is an
onsite wastewater treatment system. It uses nature's own ability to
treat and clean water to dispose of the wastewater generated by the
home's occupants.
What is a septic inspection?
A certification?
A septic system
inspection is a procedure used to determine the operating condition
of a septic system. A complete inspection involves the evaluation
of the entire septic system from the house to the drain field, for
proper operation and structural integrity. The inspection also
involves cleaning the septic tank.
A Certification is the
report that is issued following a complete inspection. The
certification summarizes the information collected during the
inspection and indicates the current condition of the system,
fitness for intended use, deficiencies, and recommendations for
use. The certification is not a warranty or guarantee of system
life.
Why should I have the system
inspected?
The septic system is
the most expensive system in the home to replace. Knowing its
condition before the sale can help eliminate unpleasant surprises
after the closing.
Who should inspect my system?
The system should
be inspected by a septic installer, pumper or licensed plumber. Due
to the lack of uniform regulatory standards not all inspections are
the same. You should seek out a contractor who is certified by the
National Association of Wastewater Transporters in the inspection of
existing onsite treatment systems. A list of certified inspectors
can be found on the NAWT website
www.NAWT.org.
What is the National
Association of Wastewater Transporters?
NAWT is a national
non-profit association designed to bring together the septic
industry and establish universal, objective standards for the
evaluation and maintenance of onsite treatment systems.
When should I have the system
inspected?
The inspection should
be completed as soon as possible after finding or listing a
property. Don't wait till the last minute.
What can I do if the system
has problems?
There are a variety of
technologies available to rejuvenate failing systems. Sometimes
however starting from scratch is the best plan of action, especially
with older systems.
The system is OK what should
I do now?
Regular, proper
maintenance will keep your system perking along for years to come.
Every 1-2 years the septic tank should be cleaned to remove built up
solids and verify proper system operation. An ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure.
